Thursday, May 31, 2018 (The Progress) by Nicole Bitette CALDWELL - Raymond Schwartz opened up his heart to dozens of students from Trinity Academy in Caldwell as he shared a heart-wrenching story of losing a dear friend in battle during WWII. Basilone received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award in the military, for going beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Henderson Field on 1942 and posthumously for his heroism during the Battle of Iwo Juma where he was killed at age 28. Little did Schwartz know that as he told the tale of losing his comrade John Basilone more than 70 years ago, a direct descendant of Basilone was in the audience watching. Michael Pescatore, 14, was listening to Schwartz recall his war experience when he heard the name "John Basilone" and nudged his social studies teacher to reveal that Basilone is his great-uncle.
